Volleyball is cancelled

It has been quite a week for volleyball cancellations.

Last Sunday I returned home early from my parents, as my elder daughter was officiating a local league match but could not get anybody from the local club to be the second referee. When we arrived at the sports hall, we were informed that the one of the net posts had fallen down when the tension was put on the net. When the bolts used to secure the post were examined, we discovered that the thread on one bolt had been stripped off. As referees we concluded that it was not safe to play the match in that situation.

On Wednesday I officiated a match in the BUCS league. The teams were in the official warm-up when one of the posts suddenly came loose after a ball was hit on to the top of the net. Fortunately in this instance, there was no damage and the failure was due to the staff not screwing the bolt in very much.

Yesterday (Saturday) I was coaching the regional under 15 boys squad in Exeter when one of the leisure centre staff came into the hall and told us to evacuate the hall. Storm Daragh had damaged the roof of the sports hall and it was not safe.
